Please donate to support the creation of the first ever #FoodBank in Jos, Plateau state.
Jos, Plateau state is situated strategically in the middle belt region of Nigeria and is sometimes referred to as the gateway to the northern part of the country. This beautiful mountainous, lush and ancient city was known in the past as the home of peace and tourism but that changed overnight, way back in 2001 when Jos experienced her first dose of ethno-religous crisis. Jos has over the past 20yrs seen her fair share of recurrent religious crisis, bombings by the dreaded boko haram sect, and in more recent years; herdsmen/farmer clashes, banditry and kidnappings.
This recurrent crisis and insecurity has led to a serious drop in the farming and crop cultivation practices carried out in the state, and as a direct result, the hunger and poverty index in the state has grown exponentially.Northern Nigeria as a whole accounts for the worlds third highest level of chronic undernutrition especially in children. More than 60-70% of the entire Northern population currently live below the poverty index.
Unfortunately, the bulk of the population in the Northern part of Nigeria continues to remain inaccessible to international humanitarian aid due to the insecurity experienced in those areas and food has continued to be a major need especially in displacement settlements scattered all across the North.
Jos has over the years witnessed a significant increase in the number of IDP (Internally Displaced Person's) camps, temporary shelters and Orphanages that have had to be set up to accommodate the ever increasing number of persons that were displaced internally within the state and the steady influx of refugees from neighbouring states seeking a safe haven from their war thorn communities and states.
Hence the need for the creation of a #FoodBank to assist in the basic feeding needs of this growing population of refugees and displaces persons.
Jos Foodies Club (JFC) is a Community Based Organization (CBO) and before now has largely been an online foodie community in existence for a little over 3 years with an online membership of over 15,000 members with social presence on Facebook, twitter and Instagram. JFC has taken the initiative and responsibility of flagging off this campaign to create a #FoodBank and raise funds (N10,000,000) to not only stock raw foodstuff to be distributed to these IDPs and orphanages but also to launch a #MobileKitchen that will cook hot meals and reach out to the poorest of the poor within and outside our community who can barely afford to eat one square meal a day.
The focus of the WHO this year as it marks the international world food day in October is to achieve #ZeroHunger and battle hunger from its roots.
Please partner with us as we take the centre stage in Jos to battle hunger, achieve food security and in the process put a smile on someone's face especially these children that have been orphaned and have no other hope of survival or existence.
